Near Acireale, Aci Sant’Antonio was the most important center in eastern Sicily in terms of the production of “Sicilian Carretti.” The town boasted the presence of many workshops of carvers and great cart painters such as was Domenico Di Mauro, whose international fame allowed within a few years to transform the cart into a sought-after art object. The line of Acireale decors that the designer proposes, celebrates “the cart,” which from being a rudimentary means of transportation, is now not only the emblem of craftsmanship and folk painting, but also the means for a transmission of knowledge conveyed by the images in it, which summarize stories and chivalrous exploits, almost as if it were a picture book.
